COMMENTS FROM PARENTS ABOUT PIANO AND VOICE LESSONS
Thanks for your piano instruction for E. He really enjoyed the lessons and I'm really pleased with how he progressed under your supervision. Thank you for all your work.
Thank you Jill, for all your time, patience and skill shared with our daughters E. and C.
Jill, you made J. giggle! He hardly even cracked a smile at his (other instrument) lessons.
My daughter B. took piano lessons from Jill. She absolutely loved it. Jill is very patient with her when she may not have practiced or if she makes mistakes. Jill is very positive; always encouraging B. to try her hardest and to keep a goal in mind so she has something to strive for. Jill goes out of her way for all her students. She hosts recitals so the kids can show off their talents and the parents and grandparents who may not always be at the lessons can see how they are doing. It is great fun for all. I would definitely encourage you to take lessons from Jill. You will not be disappointed.
Tips for making the most of your piano/voice practice times and Skype/in person music lessons
1. Piano/voice practice must be done regularly, ideally in a quiet place away from other noises and distractions. A shorter regular daily practice time is far more effective than one long practice time a day before your lesson.
2. Make piano/voice practice a part of your daily routine. It might be a good idea to practice during the same hour each day. Some students find it helpful to keep a log of their practice times.
3. Start practicing soon after your lesson while your teacher's instructions and advice are still fresh in your mind.
4. Isolate problem areas in pieces and practice them first until you can play/sing them fluently. Start slowly and increase speed gradually. You will not make progress by merely playing/singing through the entire piece each time.
5. Piano - Always practice your pieces with hands separate first until you know it well enough to play it with both hands. Count carefully and look at key signatures and accidentals (flats, sharps, naturals) to avoid practicing mistakes.
6. It's always a good idea to practice with a metronome to help you not to speed up or slow down. A metronome is a great investment for any musician.
7. It is helpful if others in the house are not streaming TV or playing online video games at the same time as the Skype lesson, to have the best internet connection possible. Close off any tabs on the Skype device that aren't needed for the lesson.
8. Google Classroom should be open and ready on a second device - separate from the Skype device (being sure that the devices are already charged or plugged in)
PIANO/VOICE LESSON MATERIALS - Be sure to organize materials in advance, so they are easily at hand in the practice area. All loose papers/booklets should be put in a binder with titled dividers.
-Contact me the day after the lesson if you didn't get the homework Doc, can't open it, or have ANY questions about the homework or where to find materials on Classroom.
-If needed, put your lesson day and time on a calendar or set an alarm/reminder - I will stay on Skype for up to 7 minutes if you don't answer at your set lesson time. If I don't hear from you for the lesson I will send you a note on Skype and hope to see you again the next week. Please contact me if you are running late, or need a phone lesson that day due to internet problems.
-Be sure that the child is sitting at a proper height for the piano or keyboard. They may need to sit on a pillow if their wrists droop down below the keys when seated. If using a keyboard be sure the stand is set at the appropriate height.
-Try to be present during your children’s practice, even if you are just listening. Depending on their age, your children may need basic assistance (organizing materials, reading my lesson notes, troubleshooting) or they may simply appreciate your physical presence in the room.
-Provide “reasons” for your children to practice. Family members who are not in physical contact with you would LOVE to have recorded performances or live online performances of your children’s music-making. Prepping for any sort of performance can be very motivating to children. These recordings are also precious memories for you and your children to have in years to come!
-Play piano games with your children! I have either given or mailed many to each student. If you need more just let me know!
